Default Distributor Base to Condenser Insulator...

This was Fords part number A-12138.

It was made by Bosch (#IS-78054) and Autolite (#IGF-36).

I wonder if there was a patent on this part??? and wonder just where in the Patent website one would find this jewell!

Does it have a patentable idea?

There are potentially TWO patents. One for the applicator and another for the compound. The drawing MAY shed some light. However the drawing will likely show an "M" spec (material specification number) for the compound for Ford's own mix that evades any registered version. I'm not sure if they are equipped to pull the material specification sheets. The few I have were acquired while they were still at Ford!

I'd like to see the info as well but even though it's been a curiosity of mine for years I'm too cheep to spring for the records!

So,...when it went from an "A" to an "18" , is it a correct part?
I've never seen the remains......

No, it was for the V8 distributor only. It had the depth for a plug to be held by friction. As a side note, I'm confident it was never intended as an insulator, but as a seal against moisture.

There was a Service Bulletin note (can't locate now) that essentially said replace the wax-like plug (meaning reinstall?). Ford never offered anything through service to replace it suggesting it wasn't exactly feasible. If you look at my pic below of an NOS distributor (which a previous owner dug out the "plug") you'll see the residue from the plug all the way to the base of the screw slot.

All these facts together led me long ago to conclude that what was installed as the plug was done so in a soft state to fill the shape of that shallow area and adhere. This could have been done with something that would cure similar to caulking does or something installed while softened by heat. That is why I suggest it required a special tool to form that seal or plug. Additionally, I also believe it was always done by the supplier and never by Ford.

I believe it is gutta percha based...just my opinion. A soft material would also explain the oversize washer...

In reality I don't think it's needed except the original formation had a neat finished look to it. With that said I don't think dum-dum would take the heat. I would think it would push the oils out, shrink, and eventually crumble.

I thought of mentioning your take on it but took so long trying to convey my thoughts clearly that I was burned out by then (and hungry)! BTW, I still have the sample of gutta percha you sent me some years back (when we talked about this) in a drawer!
