Is this Thread Dead?

Just watched " Shadowed " 1946. One of the main characters, Lester Binkey drives a Highboy 1932 Ford Roadster. To quote his HS sophomore girlfriend, its a "Hot Rod, a low slung roadster with twin pipes" The car appears in two scenes, a true period hot rod in 1946!

I don't recall noticing at the time but apparently in the early episodes of "The Mod Squad" series from the late 1960s there was a 1950 Mercury woody wagon. They wrecked it eventually.

I watch a lot of TCM. Love or hate ted turner as a guy (not sure why you'd dislike the dude), his company still broadcasts old movies. Any given day you can catch some nice cars always.

They run Sunday matinee sometime late at night, car stuff, surf and monster .

Yes, TCM is one of the few channels I'd never give up. Always enjoy the old autos that show up in the movies. Like this shoebox Ford from "The Day The Earth Stood Still".

Hmm, "The Day the Earth Stood Still" (first version) was filmed in 1951, so there could hardly have been any of "them new 55 police cars". They were all 1951's, all "Deluxe" models. Being a 1951 Ford owner, I like this movie, and not for only that reason. I think it is interesting that Hugh Marlowe's '51 Custom convertible has blackwall tires. Both of these factors add a bit of realism to the film. Big city police department would never spend the money to upgrade to the fancier Custom" sedans and hardly anyone ordered whitewall tires back then. I remember seeing a pictures of a contemporary Ford dealership taken in 1951. Eight or ten cars are in plain sight, and not a one of them has whitewalls, not even the convertible featured in the center of the picture.

Seems most of the ads in magazines of the day showed white wall tires but yes, the extra cost might have steered more buyers to the plain black wall option. Interesting to notice in this photo that the Ford at right has black walls. I think even the Lincoln in centre has them. Only the Merc at left has white wall tires.

Ah your totally correct, my bad. I am now thinking about the great matinee movie "THEM!" about nuclear ants, but that was 54 and had 53 police cars.

Not sure what movie I was thinking... but Love them old movies.
