Default Y block Mercury engine color?

I have a pair of valve covers from a '56-7 Mercury Y block and want to paint them close to the original colors. Can anyone let me know the color of the valve covers and were the Mercury letters done in another color? Thanks,

Below photos show color sequence 1954-1957.

The 56 MERC Rocker Covers had four different color shemes depending on the HP rating.

The picture with the yellow engine is a '55 Mercury, so this color doesn't apply to '56 or '57.

Also the picture of the pale blue or green engine with the oblong air breather is a '54 Mercury 256 Y-Block V8.

When you click onto the small photos to enlarge them, the Years of the various models are listed against each photo, but not visible as thumbnail size.

Sal
Uh Sal,

I showed the four model runs of the MERC FYB so colors (engine-rocker covers-ACL) are shown.

Yes, my stupid mistake. Didn't notice the print on the bottom of the photos. Guess I'm not perfect. I feel good that I knew what they were though.

Post Re: Y block Mercury engine color?

It seems there is much confusion on MERC colors-

Case in point below. GOLD engine, RED intake manifold, WHITE rocker covers and a BLACK BAT WING ACL.

KULTULZ, what color green is the darker green on the '54 block? I got the light green from Hirsch, but can't find the darker green anywhere. Thanks, John

I wish I could tell you. Usually, color codes (incl engine) are given in the period MPC-CHASSIS CATALOG. I don't see it listed.

Try these guys and see what they have. Please get back as everyone is wanting to know a source.

I just got off the phone with the 'experts' at Eastwood. They were of zero help and didn't have a clue where I might find the correct green for the '54 Mercury Y block. Oh well.

The gold, red, white, batwing(caddy) air cleaner 292 is a motor I built for raceron's '56 Vicky. The gold colored block was a close match to the original color of the '55 Merc block used. The other colors were customer preference and not an attempt at original factory spec.

I apologize for the reference. I was attempting to show that all examples are not OEM.

Please retain me on your CHRISTMAS CARD LIST ...

The 56 MERC engine was painted GOLD wasn't it?

Kultulz, not a problem. Actually, was quite proud to see one of my jobs used as a reference. Not sure, but believe '56 Merc was the same goldish/greenish white as the '55 block/heads.

Thumbs up Re: Y block Mercury engine color?

I was just using the photo as an example, not criticizing. I mean, it looks nice to me and is the owners desire.

I found this while CAROUSING WITH MY BROWSER looking for the color code -

Quote:
... searching for 55 merc engine paint, also color of certain parts like the crank pulley and draft tube, was it yellow-tan or black like the fords? this engine has the high compression heads, so according to the service bulletin, the air cleaner and valve covers would be the yellow-tan vs the cream white of the standard compression motor?

I have a MERC TEXT I need to find hidden in a deep dark bunker. Will get back.

In '55 there were two Mercury Y-Blocks offered. The Montclair came standard with a 198 HP 292 (like the T-Bird), and all other models came with a 188 HP 292. The 198 HP engine was 8.5:1 compression, and the 188 HP was 7.5:1
Based on KULTULZ's quote above, it sounds like 188 HP got the cream/white air cleaner, and 198 HP got the pale yellow one. I know the '55 Montclair I used to have, had the pale yellow one and was 198 HP.
