Default 1941 V8 stock Backfiring question

If I had a situation where I had some extreme backfiring take place what damage can be done to the engine?

Specifically can it damage a spark plug?

Depending on the carburetor, believe it can destroy the power valves. Don't think it should hurt the plugs.

You could start a fire, I had this happen on a school bus non flathead motor, burnt the wiring up before we could get the fire out.

Is it backfiring through the carb. or tailpipe? If it's the tailpipe pour some MMO through the carb. keep it running for 5 or 10 seconds then flood it with a big gulp of MMO and let it set for a while. You can also use automatic trans. fluid. Valves could be sticking and this helps to clean them. Al
