Default Engine missing and backfiring 41 ford

I read a post that concerned the dist. caps, mine don't have contenuity from the inside pins to the wire sockets, am I grasping for stars or is there something wrong with that. I just spoke with Skip about the condensor, he said it checked ok. He suggested pouring MMO in the carb. thinking it could be stuck valves, l poured it slow then choked it down with a big slug of MMO, he said let it set until I get my tank cleaned. That's done and have 10 gal. gas drained from tank, that's all I could get out with a 10 ft. credit card, will have to drain rest thru plug in tank. Al

I am running a test cap on my flathead that didn't have contenuty to any of the pins. The stror line is don't worry about it the spark will easily jump the gap......

What I did was take a cap that when seated in the distributor housing the gab between the rotor and the distributor was as good as it can get. I then drilled out the bottom of each plug socket just enough to be ably to fill the void with thin copper wire then added solder.
I am sure many people will consider this crazy but I wanted to try it the cap as approx 200 miles on it and is running strong . I just figured any and all improvements to to ckt can only help.

I feel the same way, I'm not new to the ignition field. I worked as a field service man working on industrial ignition systems in refineries all over the Tx. coast and La. never heard of spark jumping through bakelite insulators, I guess it's live and learn. Thanks Al

I was going to post a picture of an original dizzy contact point and a modern one, but in my move I think I've lost the later/original part. The contact point was at least twice as big ion the distributor side originally. Cracked for faulty parts are not really that uncommon are they?

One think I didn't mention was after I modified the cap the spark that I visualized when pulling the wire off the plug was stronger then when I started. So in my opinion what I did made an impact of some effect.

Did you drill all the way through from wire socket to inside pin, and did you have continuity when you finished. What drill size? Al

I will post a couple of pics. But yes I drilled out the base of the socket the actual pin is offset front the center off the hole and is tough to see but if you take an old cap and drill it you will see tight away that there is a big open area under the socket and the pin is just sitting at the bottom of the hole. I suspect the pin is molded in at the time the thing is in a mold and the socket is just pushed in after. The size drilled I used was approx .25 inches but started smaller. It really is quit easy.
