Default Float level

My 1939 pickup carb 91 - 99 was flooding. I removed the top of the carb and checked the float level. for the 46 to 48 carbs the float should be set at 1.322 to 1.353" . My older Motors book says the gas level in the bowl should be 9/16" below the top edge of the bowl. My gas level was high and the float was at the right level by the standards that I had, so I set the float to be 1/8" lower in the bowl. It seems to run properly and doesn't flood. I would prefer to know what the proper level for the 91 - 99 carb should be and if I will have a problem with the float level set lower that specified.

By the way I took it for a test drive and it ran badly, like I was running out of gas. I stopped for gas and put 15.5 gals in my 16 gal tank and did not allow it to run over.

Thanks for any help coming my way.
Bill
