Believe it or not, the tank is not pitted at all from what I can see. And I've been pretty intimate with the tank.

Is it mostly dirt mixed with some rust?

A magnet can tell?

Appears to be like some time ago some kids were playing on the hood & were dumping containers of dirt in the gas tank.

Lots can happen in 80+ years.

It's mostly some sort of coating that was coming off and the new gas sped it up. Has some rust mixed in with it and sediment. Nothing really sticking to a magnet. Took this all out of the filler hole with a sheet metal ladle while the tank was still in the car.

What about the stuff on the other side of the baffles? You can't easily get to that from the filler hole.

You are correct. Cannot get to whatever is on the other side of the baffles. That's why I'm not done with my ladle and added on fuel filter. Tank has been relatively clean. Have been running the tank half full. It hasn't left me stranded yet! LOL! I'm aware of the fuel situation while driving, not a big deal to correct on the side of the road. The only way to really do it is pull the tank.

There's good project for "Gastank Renew" not sure if you have those guys where you are, but they open up the tank at the back, sandblast inside, weld back up and seal the inside. Makes for a excellent repair. The best $125.00 you'll invest.

I wouldn't want to open the tank up and reweld it back. I have everything in my shop to do that, don't like the idea. Would rather send it to a rad shop to be cleaned and sloshed. But what fun is that? Then I'll never be stuck on the side of the road with a clogged sediment bowl! LOL
