Default Tech Question; Distributors

Will a stock '49 - '53 Ford Distributor Cap work on a Mallory distributor, what about the rotor, will the stock Ford work on the Mallory... How about a combo, the stock ford Dist. cap with a Mallory rotor I have a bad Mallory cap but no Ford cap or rotor to check to see if they will interchange. Vic

Actually no , to all the above.

The 49-53 Ford uses a FA78 CAP, and FA67 Rotor, the Mallory YC uses a napa replacement of MA5 cap and MA7 rotor. The factory replacement for the Mallory is a #4004 and is no longer available in a new unit. Available on ebay from time to time at $150 plus .....

Now how bad is your cap as i do have some used ( taxi tested tough) Mallory caps etc.....??

Bubba, thanks for the info, I appreciate it. I found a new Mallory cap and rotor $45.00 so I'm going to try them out first, we'll see... Vic

Vic, I found out the hard way about the information in Jim's response to your post. However- and this is a big however- you still might want to go to your local NAPA store if it has been around for quite some time. I went to mine and asked about the Napa 4004/MA5 cap. They had one. New box, but inside was a brand spanking new NOS Mallory flattop, 3-piece cap!

When the counterman looked at it, he said, "Oh, sorry, for this old piece of junk. Let me see if I can get you a brand new one."

For once I was quick on my feet....

"Oh, just give me the darn thing...I guess I'll just have to make due here."

Oh please Brer Fox, whatever you do, please don't throw me in that briarpatch.

It's worth checking around at the old dusty, dirty NAPA bins. Might be surprised what little trinket you find in that 4004/MA5 box.

Another good tip. Thanks, I'll see if I can find an old NAPA store around here and check it out. Vic
