My transmission housing is cracked from the back around and down the passenger side and across the fill spout.
What is a good price for a good housing? I found this entire trnsmission on Ebay http://www.ebay.com/itm/Model-A-Ford...QAAOSwyElcjECU Is this a good price? |

Re: transmission housing cracked
Assuming it's in the shape it's advertised as it sure seems like a good deal to me. The cost to completely replace the internals of a good case is around $900. The sliding gears do look like they have very little wear and the cluster looks ok from the little you can see of it. I'd go for it.

Re: transmission housing cracked
I was thinking more around $400 for the internals complete - but it's been a few years since I've done one this way.
As to case alone? $20 can buy you a bare case. $50 or $100 will buy you the entire worn out transmission. I say worn out. Sometimes its better to simply examine the gears, take the best, and "minimize" replacement of gears so as not to mesh new with old too much. The best tranny I have is made up of the best parts of three others. Even the "new" tranny internals complete is not as quiet. Joe K

Re: transmission housing cracked
that is a $50 transmission with a paint job. they didn't even replace the bearings. housings are around $35 plus postage. if your trans is in good shape but the cracked housing, I would get a housing put new bearings in it and use yours. I have a nice housing with a new paint job for $55 shipping included.

Nice in that it has the frequently broken front bearing retainer and throwout bearing. Joe K

Your right his ebay add just mentions new gaskets, nothing about the bearings. Contact me with private message and we can work out the details. |

Re: transmission housing cracked
Give Bert's a call, I know he has dozens of transmissions. This is the reason I paid an extra hundred dollars and kept my core when installing a Mitchell.

Re: transmission housing cracked
I would ask around for a good case,I'm sure Barners have one to sell, shipping will cost you quite a bit,I would think $25.00 to $35.00 for the case.I have one.

Re: transmission housing cracked
Well I'm in the market for a good solid case. I had my transmission open when I replaced the clutch and the gears looked good. So if you have one and willing to part with it I would be interested in buying it.

Re: transmission housing cracked
More than likely there is some damage to some of the gears inside your transmission. A cracked case is usually caused by a gear tooth broken off and getting between the case and rotating hardware.
The attached photo shows such a failure. Tom Endy |

Re: transmission housing cracked
It has been said that a Model A transmission is so simple that a child can put it together. Attached is documented proof.

Re: transmission housing cracked
Well I wasn't quite that young on my first Model A Transmission. I was 16 or 17. That's been over 60 years ago, and I don't remember what all I did to it, but I do remember buying all the parts at NAPA.

Ive sold complete transmissions on CL for 75. in good condition.
you should be able to buy one on there inexpensively, rather then getting into shipping. |

Re: transmission housing cracked
Transmissions are EVERYWHERE. I even picked up one at my transfer station.
Spring is "clean out" time. Here in Cow Hampshire the old farms change hands over the year and the new upscale owners don't like "clutter." So they clean out their old barns and bring the stuff to disposal seemingly in the Spring. On the ground with the rest of the metal a complete Model A transmission - even still had the shift ball on top of the shift lever. ZOOM into my truck it goes. At home who can resist the temptation? About 20 minutes later I find out why the transmission had been set aside: 2nd gear idler is shot - cluster gear looked good. This baby "whined" in 2nd gear. So it got set aside. The rest of the tranny looked VERY good. unusual to see a failure of 2nd gear only. I speculated to a manufacturing defect. This tranny had the bearings replaced, a replacement used 2nd gear, and today its the BEST sounding tranny I have. A later tranny with full internal replacement I don't like nearly as well. Sorry. This is a "gloat" post. Edit: check your industrial scrapyard. Before outlawed by OSHA "cone-head" lathes and flat belt machine tools were were migrating from overhead shaft drives to individual electric motor drives. A very common adaptation done was to use a Model A Transmission and take advantage of the three speeds to provide the speed variation that the matching cone pulleys USED to do. Now these tools are migrating to the scrap yards as they present a safety risk to the users/owners. When scrapped, the appended motor/gearbox replacement usually goes with it. A craigslist example down in Harrisburg, PA This might be an AA truck transmission. Joe K
