I think utes were made because the American style Pick Up was not sold here and there was a need to something to do that job. FWIW, I think utes are a far more practicle vehicle than the P/U. I have a P/U and I'm making a ute. It will be a very useful jigger.

I dunno. I've only bought through eBay, never sold but I've had pretty good luck. It's definitely caveat emptor though.

My guess is to meet local content rules. There was a strong history of local bodies being built at the time. The side panels are quite easy to make except for the beading, and the rest is wood and some brackets and hinges made by a black smith.

Most had a hard life and were left outside under a tree. They look good until you go to move them and then the body breaks in half at the wooden sub frame.

Ford built a model A before the model T . I think the first model A's were built around 1903 or maybe before . These were real model A's but not like the ones made 28 to 31 . I doubt many of the first model A's were built and sold . Only a few probably remain .

Edsel had a one of a kind phaeton . I think that Edsel's custom phaeton may still exist . I think that Henry complemented Edsel's taste in styling because of this one .

Brent. The utility was created as a practical low cost all round vehicle mainly for the farming sector. The early 1928 Utes had Model T rear guards until they used up all the remaining stock. They were built in three versions the straight sided, flare sided and the most practical unit was the well type ute. My 1930 ute was a very late manufactured unit sold to a dealer in late 1932.

Ok, but my question is more to the point of why did the Australian feel the need to redesign a 'low cost" vehicle? Why create the tooling for an integral body instead of using the bed and cab as-is?? Ford tried that technique here in the states as his most Deluxe version.

So far, the answer is the 225A Drop Floor Panel Truck @ 121 produced, but I haven't seen any response by the one who is most knowledgeable on this subject, Pluick from Walla Walla.

It is not the 225A Drop Floor. It is the Travelers Wagon with 10 vehicles produced.

If you want proof go to the following web site and view the Ford production figures. These are the numbers that Pluck used in his book.

It may not be the "least produced", but at only 85 or so, the AA 280A Ambulance ranks right up there. My first vehicle of any kind was such a vehicle. I was 14 when I bought it for $45. Wish I had known then what I know now!

Ford Australia didn't have to redesign any body work to produce the Utes as such. The sides were simply a flat sheet of steel with a belt mouldings stamped along the top. The tailgate was the same simple pressing. The cowl and doors were roadster/tourer parts and the subframe was all timber. The top irons did not fold down and in fact were left over Model T irons that were modified to suit.

Since AA's were brought up the below website breaks it down.

Lowest Production Ford AA was the Funeral Service, only 17 were made. Second is the Deluxe Police Patrol with 45 rolling off the line.

Canadian production would be listed under Walkerville.
