F2 Backing Plates

I believe these to be 1952 F2 backing plates. Will these fit on the front of my 39 Ford pickup and will I be able to use original drums and wide five wheels?


If so, can someone walk me through what parts I need and process? I have done a search and read threads to be more confused now than when I first started reading.

I can't remember if the F2 brakes are 12 inch?

No you need later spindles, F2 drums and 40 wheels.

Parts for the F2 & F3 brakes are getting more difficult to source. I don't think the drums are reproduced and I don't know of any that are close enough to be adapted.

The F2s are 12", and they're desirable because they're "Bendix" self-energizing. They will bolt to your Ford spindle, but will NOT work with a Ford drum because the F2 backing plate has about a 1/2" difference in offset as compared to the Lockheed brake plate. In other words, the brake shoes will hit the outside of an early Ford drum. The F2s are desirable in something like a Buick drum adaptation where the drum's SURFACE placement will be manipulated inboard/outboard via use of a different hub. DD

Don't confuse F2s and F1s. F1s are 11" in diameter. F2s are 12"! DD

The only one that comes readily to mind would be the correct year Lincoln backing plates, or Lincoln REARS which all have the same CORRECT offset of the backing plate that matches the Ford FRONT offset, or the simple way...….purchase a pair of M/TCar Products Lincoln repro backing plates, fully loaded with shoes, hydraulics etc., for $400 and be done with it. You can use your '39 drums with the M/T brakes. The F2s are really a bunch of trouble to use correctly because of that offset. DD

On my 50 F2 we had to reverse the16" rims to get them to clear the drums. They originally ran 17" rims on the F2
