Hello, second post from a long time lurker.
Bought this 1930 from an online auction.
1) Goal is first to get it roadworthy.
Have the 2 volume model A books

Previous owners family said it ran a few years ago? Registration hanging on steering column says 1972. Oil was relatively clean, radiator holds water, all levers seem free. Barn it was in had a roof leak that dripped on driver side roof so gonna have to replace the vinyl roof.

No battery yet so need recommendations on that.

Still at the cleaning/investigation stage.
Ordered a bunch of parts including the belt.
Dropped the pan and cleaned out a couple inches of sludge. Cleaned oil pump and noticed it was missing the lower gasket. Hopefully motor will run. Has the original tools under the front seat. Used the crank to see if the motor was stuck. It hand cranks pretty easy.
Gas tank was dry, added a gallon to see what came out. Gas came out clean amazingly.

Pulled and cleaned pan, replaced dash and engine wiring, diconnected all lighting wiring, new battery cables, rebuilt distributor, rebuilt gas gauge, changed trans fluid, replaced ball mount on front radius arms(wow that was a pain! Bolts needed replacing and one fell in bellhousing took me an hour to fish it out!), and a new belt!

Bought a new 8 volt battery to see if I could get it to turn over. Battery would crank one revolution and read 2 volts
Robbed the coil and 12v battery off of my 52 Ferguson tractor and put it on.
Motor cranked maybe 3 revolutions and fired up! Smoked like crazy for 5-10 minutes as I let it warm up and looked for leaks. Never touched carb.
Front crank seal leaks a little. Looks like its leaking from crank not pan. And one of the valve cover bolts seams to leak. I filled radiator to the top and put cap on before starting. Lost some water from overflow and lower hose leaks a little at radiator. Water pump seems good!

Ordered a few more parts including a 12v regulator to replace the one on the factory generator.
Was hoping to keep it stock with 6v but with all the parts needing replaced it was just wiser to go 12v. Still have to get the wiring for the lighting circuits.

The stock generator didn't have a regulator,only a coutout, so what do you have??

I would never use an 8 volt battery.
If it doesn't start right up with a 6 volt battery, then something needs to be fixed.

Yeah, take the 8V back and tell them it was dead (it was). Going 12V is not a bad idea but read up on all you need to change before you dive in. If you're not interested in show, go with an alternator.

Bob, Im not totally sure but I think it has a newer 6v regulator in place of the factory cut out.

As I dig deeper it looks like some parts were changed from stock like the cutout, water pump, fuel bowl, ect.

I found a place online that sells a regulator/cutout that makes the stock generator charge at 12v. If that doesnt work I'll be putting an alternator on.

New problem is starter stays on, took assembly off starter trying to figure out what returns foot button after pressing? No springs visible? Maybe its a cheap repo?

I found that same water pump on ebay. Looked interesting so I bought it. I think it's either an aftermarket or from a Model A engine that was maybe used on some industrial unit (like welder). It's really heavy duty, I haven't pulled the top cover yet but seams like it could be industrial strength ? Because it was different I bought it.

That pump has a plain bushing on the fan end which doesn't impress me very much. The seal is a more modern style which could be good, too bad there isn't a real bearing on the front.

If you google on "The Ford Model A
Water Pump.pdf", it will bring up a file you can download and ident your water pump as to modern or,vintage 28-29 or 30-31. If it does not fit this article it may be a Sears of the day replacement or some other vintage after market type.

Im guessing its an old aftermarket one, under all the grease it was red but cant make out the label on top. It seems to be working fine so far so wont fix whats not broken

Drove it for the first time this past weekend so have lots of stuff needing fixing. Shocks up front are siezed. Rears are missing the links. Rides like a farm wagon. Didnt get it past second gear before running out of road (not legal yet so just back alley driving).
