Hi, I didn't actually use my drill press to drill the hole, just to mark center with a ½" drill bit. Sorry for the confusion.
When I drilled the hole I used a 5/16" drill bit and held the cap with my hand against my wooden work bench. The copper cap is soft and drills easily. After drilling I polished them on my bench grinder.
