If he hadn't said "Salt Flats" I would have thought North Carolina mountains road
. Last year I followed a trail from my home all the way to Raleigh NC, 3hours away. A distinct trail of whatever they spray when they don't use granulated salt or whatever it is. I know it seems like we are to far south to be in the rust belt but there's northern areas that don't get the salt we do. I dread it already.
