Not a "Myth", but a combination of two unrelated facts.
The Porsche
Continental was a badge applied to the pre 356A cars imported to the US from October 54 to October 55. No special engine. All had the 55 HP flat four, pushrod. There was no "special" Continental engine.
The
Carrera engine came along later in the 356's life and did have a roller bearing lower end (as well as 4 overhead cams). It was essentially a race only engine, but you could buy one in a street legal production car (very expensive). They would rev higher than a regular 356 engine and likely needed a fast idle due to the lumpy cams.
