Sounds a little bit like impending vapor lock. It may not kill a running engine, but the fuel level in the float chamber drops, which cuts fuel flow through the jets a little. Hit the accelerator pump, an off she goes, - for a little bit.

Does this happen on hot days? Do you have an electrick fuel pump?
