Dyke's and the Ford Service Bulletins are in agreement:
The transmission should have one pint of gear oil. It has been my experience that more than one pint will leak onto the floor and likely be confused as a rear main bearing leak. One pint makes the oil level about halfway up the cluster gear.
The rear axle should have 1-1/2 pints of gear oil. This is enough oil to cover the teeth on the bottom of the ring gear.
