Up through the '50's, maybe '60's, most guys grew up watching/helping their dads/grandpas, uncles, older cousins, etc. overhaul engines, transmissions, etc., so early on developed a 'feel' for how much to tighten a particular bolt. That training has now been largely lost, partly because Dads have desk jobs, and partly because many single (voluntarily single, often) mothers don't think their sons need a father to teach them how to use their hands!
