Sounds like a "pull the engine" scenario.

MUCH easier to work on an engine in a stand rather than facing up from underneath.

I would pull, get a stand you can "flip" ($50 at Harbor Freight) Make or buy an "attachment plate" which connects the engine to the stand (or use the included brackets which don't impress me) and start getting your hands dirty.

You're probably past any warranty given the time and the miles, but you may find the problem "recoverable" by removing shims - or you may find "shade tree" engine mechanic. Not putting in the helical oil groove could be very likely.
