"deuce_roadster" mentioned a mezzanine. If you have high ceilings, (14' or more), you really should have one. I have a 40 X 30 shop and put in a 30 X 8 mezzanine across the back with an 8 X 8 "office" area between the main mezzanine and the stairs. I wish I had made it twice as large. I have pallet racking across the back wall of the mezzanine area for parts storage; it would have been nice to have had the pallet racking on both sides. You really only need the high ceilings for clearance on a lift. Unless you have a sailboat or an RV, most of the space between 7' and 14' is just wasted.
