I did experiment with the length but decided I liked the longer one better. When you shorten it the 'ribs' on the porcelain show and IMO it looks better with the ribs covered. The 'rib' do show on the 3X plug tho. The W16Y is a lot taller than a 3X.
But have fun with it and do as you think best.
