First of all, thanks for all the feedback.
I would like to rule out differential. I turned the wheel hub without the wheel and brake drum, so everything went smoothly and freely.
I also chamfered the new brake pads at the ends. Everything fits.
No traces of sanding can be seen on the carrier plate. That would be noticeable as these were repainted. You can see notches on the brake drum, but I think that these are much older. There are no fresh traces to be seen.
The handbrake lever return spring is new. I even had to buy two sets because the first two broke during the cumbersome assembly. The now installed are in very good condition.
