If you want a different perspective about the early years of automobile evolution, check out "Cadillac, The complete seventy-year history", by Maurice Hendry. I agree with the Dodge brothers involvement with the engines etc., but Cadillac and Ford had common problems that required outside suppliers. Leland and Falconer were building superior engines in 1904 and Ford was having mechanical issues with Dodge furnished units. How much shared or stolen design information was used back then makes for some interesting reading. I have a 1904 Cadillac, one cylinder, copper jacketed engine and the early designs are very similar.
