I like to remove the clevis pins at the rear backing plate (probably what you are calling a face plate) brake lever, and remove the brake rod guide bolts from the wishbones, leaving the guides on the rods. Then carefully tie the brake rods up towards the frame somewhere to get them out of the way. Just my way of doing it.
