Here's a few photos that may help. I tapped the seal in so it seats on the ridge in front of the bearing. Car is 40 Ford. Double check to make sure you have the seal facing the correct direction. I am not sure I got it right. The last photo shows a 40 ford rear hub i bought in 1964. Notice how it appears to have grooves for 2 snap rings - one for the bearing and another for the seal. Were some rear hubs made like that configuration or are my eyes playing tricks on me.?
