Even easier, if it looks like there is a lot of room on the sides of the engine, it's a 289 style V8. 289's were very narrow compared to a 352. If it fills the engine compartment from side to side, it's probably a 352 (FE V8).
A 289 almost looks out of place because it's so narrow compared to the FE V*'s (352 etc.).
