Re: Slang-feel free to add
Thank you, that list brought back a bunch of memories. I do have a few to add:
Drag pipes: long chromed exhaust pipes that ran along the bottom edge of each side of the car and were illegal unless capped.
Cut-outs: cables hooked from dash to where drag pipes connected to regular exhaust and controlled a valve that opened and closed drags pipes when the caps were off the drag pipes
Lakers: same as drag pipes
Spinner or squirrel knob: attached to steering wheel and made turning the wheel much easier. Very dangerous and often got caught in shirts or jackets
Full moons: spun aluminum wheel covers that covered the entire metal rim and cut down on wind resistance
Leaded; before Bondo and body filler, holes and seams were filled with moltan lead which quickly hardened and was shaped to smooth out the body and fenders
Roll bar or bars: installed behind front seat on open cars for protection if car rolled
Ported and relieved: engine exhaust ports are enlarged and polished by using a wire brush on a drill. Same is done to intake ports on manifold or headers
Some of this stuff originated in Southern California and worked its way up the West Coast, so it wasn’t necessarily used elsewhere.
