"stovebolts" can be slotted flat countersunk or slotted pan head. I don't know why the chevy inline 6 was/is called a "stovebolt", only that it was/is. If the valve cover, side cover and pan came with slotted pan heads then that would seem a reasonable reason for the nickname. The one in my '57 truck has pan head philips for the valve cover (obviously been changed) and regular 1/4" hex bolts on the side cover (also possibly changed). I wasn't interested enough to climb under and check the pan bolts but I suspect, 1/4" hex.
