I would not be afraid to sleeve the axle. I sleeved the axle in my son's '47 tonner years ago when my brother owned it and he put quite a few miles on it without any issues. Larger truck axles are sleeved all the time, I used to sleeve a lot of axles for the local school bus garage and local busineses. Also, as others have said, the axle needs to be straightened cold.
