From my memory, at least some of the 4-barrel carbs back in the '50s-'60s had smaller primary bores/jets than the two barrel carbs offered. This would give better mileage in cruise and more power if you floored it. I don't have the specs to confirm this, so maybe someone can confirm or dispute.
