It just drops into place. Once it's in and before you install the fuel pump, have some one kit the key and turn the engine a revolution or two and watch the rod; it should go up and down. If you want to measure it, I think it should move .22".

I have found it's easier to bolt the fuel pump to the stand and install that assembly as a unit rather than bolting on the stand and then installing the pump.
