I've seen that spring below the pump piston in a few carbs. I agree it's not in any parts drawings. If the hole in the throttle lever for the pump link is worn (or the pin on the link is worn) it can cause some slop and the throttle will move slightly before the pump piston goes down. The helper spring can help take up the slop and make the pump react quicker. That's the only advantage I see to the spring. Also it doesn't hurt anything being in there.
