I believe what Steve is asking is the early style baffles were different than the more common later ones and he's wondering which side goes against the carrier.

I do not know one way or the other but playing around with it I assumed the "spacer" portion of the rear baffle goes against the carrier to keep space between the carrier and baffle.

I don't have any of the early front baffles but here is a picture of one from Brattons.
