Coop, support on the bottom side is certainly a good idea, but when the swedge has been cut they usually are not too tuff to get moving. In my youth when I did not know about the swedge I had the local auto parts store do it for me. They did not know either and beat the still swedged studs until they bent the hub.
I am usually working on 40 style drums, and use this custom made backer.
note, its not flat, same angle as to 40 hub, and has a notch to clear the web on a 40 style hub.
