With the engine running, the voltage on the coil primary terminal that leads to the points will depend on the dwell. The more the dwell (the time the points are closed) the lower the voltage. If the points are closed half the time (45* dwell on a 4 cylinder car) then the voltage should be about 3 volts on a 6 volt system. This is theory and I've never measured it. There are inductive forces in the primary windings that may change this voltage reading.
