I just did mine. Was having the same thoughts as you and what Ct Jack said.
another fella here on the Barn mentioned being able to do it that way, and never dawned on me that it would take a filter. I am so used to installing them under the dash/tank.

I also added a plastic filter right before the carb. Ive done this for yrs and never had a problem with ruining a carb.
