If the carpet is old, tear it out and get a new one. I think Auto Custom Carpets are sold by Summit racing and I believe you can get a new molded carpet from them for your Merc. I recall that those carpets were not glued down from the factory. You might try a paint scraper to try to lift it out if you think you can save it, but it's tricky.
