Default Re: Standard oil pump or hi- volume 59 block 8ba crank

80 lb. pump? Why? All you're doing is heating the oil by forcing an excessive amount through the bearings and wasting horsepower at the same time. With factory bearing clearances, factory oil pressure is plenty.
This may be an apples and oranges comparison, but I drag race a '67 Cougar with a 289. It sees at least 7400 RPM every run. It has a stock standard volume, standard pressure oil pump with around 40-45 lbs. pressure. Been doing this for about 15 years and the crank was still standard when I had it apart last winter to install domed pistons. I even reused the same bearings. Read up on the theory of hydrodynamic lubrication and you will see that high oil pressures are not needed in normal or even mild performance use. Endurance or Bonneville type racing has different requirements to allow for extra loose clearances and bearing and oil cooling.
