I did 1930 plates many years ago. I first applied several heavy coats of the letter/number color. Then one good coat of plate color. After letting dry for about a week I rubbed off the letters and numbers with compound. Lots of work but the results are as good as it gets. This was back in the 70's so the plates have been hanging in the garage a long time. Best part is there is no ridge it feels like the plate was painted all at one time.
