My experience, which may or may not be relevant:
Many moons ago, we had a 30 Sporty for which original top fabric was unobtainium. So we put on a canvas L-B top. I got caught in a downpour at a show. Top didn't leak but it did wick rain around the seams, resulting in some stains.
