I disagree, the shaft is kept from moving when it left the factory was the webing in the head. If you look in the head from the water pump end you will see what I mean. This wears out and play can be had on the shaft. Two ways to fix, 1) rebuild the pump with a longer shaft and grind as necessary. 2) use the collar and Teflon washer.
