My guess is to meet local content rules. There was a strong history of local bodies being built at the time. The side panels are quite easy to make except for the beading, and the rest is wood and some brackets and hinges made by a black smith.

Most had a hard life and were left outside under a tree. They look good until you go to move them and then the body breaks in half at the wooden sub frame.
