I've used a mechanical pump in the past with no regulator. It can have it's problems too, none so far.
Guess I would like to see someone, better then me, post a how to test your fuel pressure with a gauge on here.
Know what condition your condition is actually in.

Testing fuel pressure is not hard. I installed a tee in line to carb, used a barb fitting for gauge hose. When done replaced with a 1/8" plug. You could also mount a small gauge in line and leave it.
