On NOS Ford pinions, the forward bearing does slip on making adjustments easy. With aftermarket gears you need to take a little material off the pinion until the bearing is a slip fit. With the pinion in a lathe I use an oilstone to adjust the diameter as it is a pretty hard surface. This is definitely worth the effort when you need to adjust the preload. I have the KR Wilson tool to measure the preload but it is just inch pounds.
