As I remember the OD relay shorted out the points momentarily. When I converted my boat to electronic ign [with a Mercruiser outdrive] I shorted out the leg from the brain to the coil (GM HEI). Depending on your particular electronic ign not too sure if your electronics would take it.
The old Mercruiser outdrive shifted from forward to reverse in the same manner as an OD trans (having to remove engine torque during the shift).

Probably a better method is to take a relay and cut the B+ feed momentaily using the OD relay as the trigger.
