To keep taxes/inventory/carrying costs down manufacturers keep only enough material and finished goods on hand to meet projected sales/orders. Any disruption or increase in demand is catastrophic and ripples throughout the supply chain for that product.
No longer do manufacturers keep weeks/months or finished goods in stock to cover deviations in increased demand, or disruptions.
