Default Re: Model T Ring gear,

Intersecting spiral bevel gear set is the general term where the two shaft centers intersect with each other. A hypoid spiral bevel gear set is a non intersecting gear set with the pinion center below the ring gear center. The amboid gear set has the center of the pinion above the center of the ring gear.

The early American Austin cars may have used a similar axle and eventually the name was changed to American Bantam. This link has a photo of an American Austin or Bantam rear axle that had been for sale on flea-pay at some time in the past.

When American Bantam became involved with the War Department Jeep project contract, I think they switched over to the small Dana Spicer rear axle so they could match it with an all wheel drive front axle. Bantam didn't make much after the war and eventually sold out to American Rolling Mills.
