I find it relatively easy to cover the edges of the inserts with thin masking tape then carefully cut away around the perimeter with razor blades and a sharp utility knife. Clean the panel with acetone before you apply the tape, and use a semigloss or satin black paint from a rattle can. I’ve done a couple this way with good results.
