The doodle bugs I've seen with JD engines usually used the LUC drive set up from the pull behind combine. It's the same basic engine as the LA but a different drive. It seems to me that it's a small three spring clutch. It should be easier to actuate.

Hydraulic clutch actuators are out there but I don't remember what the input retainer sleeve diameter is. The Ford stuff had some pretty big ones and a lot of the later stuff is less than 1.375".
