I think that if you dont put a restricter in the horizontal gallery, that the oil won't go through your filter. It will instead flow directly through the block.
A friend has advised on another forum that the restricter is a threaded piece of steel with a 5 mm hole through it. The engines I am referring to were Australian Bren Carriers. They were fitted with an oil cooler, and a bypass valve. The purpose of the bypass valve was to let cold oil circulate via the bypass, until it was thin enough to flow through the cooler The copper pipes to and from the cooler would at a guess be 7/16 (11 mm) I.D.
